Te Manaaki o Te Marae: The role of marae in the Tāmaki housing crisis
‘Te Manaaki o te Marae’ project is a two-year kaupapa Māori research project (2017-2019) based at Te Puea Memorial Marae. Co-led by Prof Jenny Lee-Morgan and Rau Hoskins, this study investigated the ways in which marae can be strengthened to maanaki tangata and assist in addressing whānau aspirations and needs for long term affordable, healthy housing?.
A multi-dimensional study, this project brought together a large transdisciplinary research team, guided by advisors Prof Linda Tuhiwai Smith and Prof Ella Henry.
There were several outputs from this project that include articles, books, photo exhibitions, video stories, wānanga and symposia. Some of these are featured below.
Te Manaaki o te Marae Photographic Exhibition – Māngere Arts Centre, Ngā Tohu o Uenuku (22 June – 10 August 2025)
This exhibition, through documentary photography by Te Rawhiri Bosch, provided insight into the Manaaki Tangata programme at Te Puea Memorial Marae in Mangere. This exhibition is another way to tell some of the stories of Te Puea Marae and the Manaaki Tangata programme, in particular the strength of whānau to live in relation to their communities in a self-determining way.It shares the mantra of manaakitanga at its heart, and the normalisation of Māori cultural practices.
